Sarah Windsor & Matt Renard - UFC

By Sarah Windsor & Matt Renard

Last Saturday night, we were standing at a bar in a crowd of a couple hundred people when it occurred to us that we were witnessing a relatively new trend.  Everyone was standing around, drinks in hand, watching intently as Canadian George St. Pierre was brutally beating American BJ Penn.  Regardless of who you were cheering for, we were all there for the same reason: we are all fans of Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC.

UFC is a mixed martial arts organization and it is currently recognized as the largest mixed martial arts organization in the world.  In other words, it is a brutal and bloody fight between two men that takes place in a metal chain-linked octagon ring or “the cage” as dubbed by the UFC.

UFC fans are thrill-seeking males, 14-35, who are looking to always be entertained.  Unlike the previously popular WWF, The UFC is real fighting, and nothing can beat that in the eyes of the fans.  It is as if you are watching a real fight go down in your friend’s backyard, except that the UFC fighters are extremely athletic and well trained.  They are highly regarded in the fighting community for their skills and do not like to be compared to WWF fighters.

Speaking of fighting in the backyard,  apparently UFC is actually somewhat rooted in the backyards of some American hoodlum  who  recorded home fights and post them on YouTube.  A very smart person caught on to this trend, and before you know it, UFC was advertised everywhere, especially on the Spike channel.  There are guys everywhere. UFC is something only our generation could handle.
