Lindsay Lummus & Meggie Weirich - Twilight

By Lindsay Lummus & Meggie Weirich

“Twilight” is a science fiction book series consisting of four novels describing the romance between a girl (mortal) and a boy (vampire). This book series grabbed the attention of their target audience: a variety of ethnic girls between the ages of 12-17.  A movie was created based off the book series and premiered in November of 2008. A “Twilight Signing Tour” began shortly after, where the main actors in the movie traveled across the U.S. to thank their fans and sign memorabilia.

One instance that made headline news was the signing tour booked in San Francisco, California at the Stonestown Galleria. Police expected around 500 fans to show up, but to their surprise, over 3,000 bombarded the front entrance of the Galleria. The crowd got so out of control that the Twilight staff cancelled the signing event, since fans were getting injured by the minute.

With the Twilight trend comes many business opportunities for companies to make money. Co-branding with Twilight is a great opportunity for a business to thrive. Many have already taken advantage of this trend creating dolls, clothes, accessories, and even food items with “Twilight” on their label.

This national trend began around the beginning of 2008, but got insanely popular once the movie came out. Newspapers across the nation say Twilight is the next biggest thing behind the Harry Potter book series. Stephanie Meyer, author of the “Twilight” book series, sold more books in 2008 than any other author.

Through our interviews with some of Twilight’s biggest fans, we have noticed it’s not just younger teens that are obsessed with the book and/or movie. Ranging from preteens to older women in their forties, every kind of woman is drawn to the romantic vampire story of Twilight.
