Michelle Guerra & Meagan Hefley - Twitter

By Michelle Guerra & Meagan Hefley

Twitter is a growing trend all over the world. Tweeting—“writing text based posts of up to 140 characters in length that are then displayed on user’s profile pages and delivered to those who have signed up to receive them”-- is now being used world wide from the United States to Japan.  Even press conferences in Israel use Twitter.

Not only is Twitter everywhere, but you can tweet from multiple devices. With the growing number of internet capable phones and devices, people are literally tweeting anywhere and everywhere. What started out as a social networking and micro-blogging site has become known as the “SMS (or text message) of internet.”

People who use Twitter vary from famous celebrities, to local new stations, radio DJ’s, businesses, advertising agencies; even our very own President is a tweeter! Since twitter is something that is easily accessible to people from cell phone devices, it has been a quick and easy way for many people to become news reporters and help spread news breaking information even before some news outlets get there. Incidents like the bird strikes on US Airways Flights in January 2009, where the plane emergency landed in the Hudson River, was actually originally photographed by a ferry rider on the Hudson who rushed to help. Also, Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that they would be the first government to hold a worldwide press conference via Twitter. He  would take questions from the public about the war between Israel and the Hamas in Gaza.

Twitter users have grown dramatically since it was founded coming in third in social networking sites as cited on compete.com, with facebook coming in as the largest and myspace in second. It is estimated that that there are 4-5 million users using twitter but it continues to grow each day. Neilsen.com in March of 2009 actually ranked Twitter as the number one fastest growing site in the Member Communities category for February, with the growth for Twitter being 1382% over facebooks 228%. Arstechnica.com says the median age of twitter uses is 31; most users are 18-34, with 19% falling under 18-24 and 20% being between ages 25-34.

There have been a lot of ways that people have already found ways to use twitter to help their businesses or their careers. Many stars use twitter to keep in touch with their fans and let them know what is going on in their lives, and what they are doing. The news media also usually has someone in charge of their twitter account also, which they use to help break news right away. Businesses though have a great oppurtunity to get the word out about their newest projects, or new great things going on with their company. Some people have used it to find people in need of their services also. So even beside being a way of social networking, you can better your business and also help keep the world well aware of what is going on quicker and easier then ever. So feel free to tweet about our blog J
