The BlackBerry is a wireless device introduced in 1999 as a two-way pager. In 2003, the BlackBerry Smart-Phone was released, combining e-mail, text messaging, web browsing, and other PDA (personal Digital Assistant) functions successfully into one device. Developed by Canadian company Research in Motion (RIM), BlackBerry first made its way in the market by concentrating on mobile e-mail.
With the explosion of smart-phones in popularity, BlackBerry has been a leader in this industry by releasing smaller versions of its phones coming in a variety of styles and colors. BlackBerry phones are highly recommended by those who use them. Primarily for its stylish looks, portability, functionability, and quality.
The variety of different versions of BlackBerry phone products and software also allows for a larger range of business mobility in accessing business/enterprise information wirelessly. BlackBerry provides different software that allows the consumer to access everything from banking and finance information to games and entertainment.
BlackBerry has done very well for investors as well. As of December 2008, RIM announced the number of BlackBerry subscribers has reached approximately 21 million. These subscribers include 375 wireless networks in 140 countries around the world. Research In Motion saw net income soar 72% for its second fiscal quarter on strong sales of BlackBerry wireless devices. For the quarter ending August 30, 2008, the company reported earnings of $495.5 million compared to earnings of $287.7 million for the same period in 2007. Revenue for the quarter surged 88% to $2.58 billion, according to estimates from FactSet Research.
